TBT: Hiking Dillon Pinnacles Trail
The Dillon Pinnacles trail is a fairly easy hike that offers great views of the Blue Mesa Reservoir and the beautiful geological formation that bears its name. I’d highly recommend this trail to anyone!

Read MoreWith the snow melting away from the alpine and wildflowers abound, July is one of the best months to ride in Crested Butte! But this July was a little more difficult for us since the snow took longer to melt than usual, keeping us from some alpine rides, and we’ve seen more monsoonal rains than normal, which have made it difficult to find good days to ride long routes. Still, we found some great July mountain biking in Crested Butte. Here’s a re-cap on some of our rides!
Read MoreGoing back to our fabulous trip to Colombia this spring, Frank and I had a little stop over at the famed Totumo Mud Volcano when we drove from Cartagena to Minca. Totumo is a volcano full of mud – but whether the “volcano” is actually real or simple a manmade tourist trap is actually a subject of debate. Nonetheless, it’s growing in popularity and was even featured in an episode of the Amazing Race. And why wouldn’t you want to go romp around in a mud pit when it’s right on the way to your intended destination? So, to Totumo Volcano we went.
Read MoreThere’s no doubt that Canyon Creek trail is hard to get to. Since is pretty much in the middle of nowhere, getting there likely requires a drive. For us coming from Crested Butte, it’s almost 1 hour and 20 minutes. You start out on a road which is easy at first. But then it gets steeper. And steeper. Sometimes it’s relentlessly steep. At the start of the singletrack you’re rewarded with admittance to the high alpine. You have a grueling hike-a-bike which sets you on top of a mountain. And then you ride down the other side. You go down and down. And just when you think it’s over, there’s more down. Sure, there’s a steep 15 minute up near the end. But, this ride has a descent that just keeps on going. The bang is certainly worth the buck on this ride.
Read MoreThis week marks 1/3 of the time I have to accomplish my goal. To be precise, today is day 35 of the 93 days of summer – technically a little over 1/3 done now. If I break down the days and miles into a proportion, I should have 263 miles done by day 35. But, I have ridden 278 miles of singletrack, 15 miles over my target!
Read MoreWhen most people think about riding in the Salida area, they think of riding off of Monarch Pass / Monarch Crest, or maybe even the Arkansas Hills area off S-Mountain, right on the east edge of town. But, south of town lies the Methodist Mountain system of trails that is generally less challenging, but still equally fun. Little Rainbow Trail is the backbone of this system of trails.
Read MoreJune is always an amazing month in Crested Butte because we always see such fast change. At the beginning of the month, many of the trails are often snow-covered and not rideable. But, every day, the snow melts a lot more then you think it will. And every day you spot more and more wildflowers that weren’t there the day before. The rate of change is remarkable. And, aside from the astounding beauty, the sheer change is part of what makes the month of June so amazing.
Read MoreThe last two years, we have been posting photos of wildflowers on Wednesdays through our social media accounts under #wildflowerwednesday. Now, it’s time to do something with those posts. Hence, the birth of our guide to Crested Butte Wildflowers!
Read MoreIt had been an number of years since I had ventured over to Monarch Pass to ride. But, Monarch Pass has a lot of great options for mountain biking and last summer, I made it a mission to ride many of the trails there. First we started out with the standard Monarch Crest route, following the Colorado Trail until we descended via Silver Creek trail and then Rainbow. But, we took two more trips there later in the season – then checking out a descent of Greens Creek Trail and then another trip to descend down Starvation Creek Trail. This report will feature the last two of our Monarch Crest adventures on Greens Creek Trail and Starvation Creek Trail.
