TR: Wang Chung and Eraser 3.17.09

(Last Updated On: )

Well, I got a little backed up doing some TR’s, mostly because I’ve been waiting for people to get me their photos. That wasn’t the case this time, as Tom was on it, but here’s another TR from the awesome dry spell we had in March that allowed us to ski some of the bigger lines with a nice solid snowpack.

After skiing this line on March 6, and with a small shot of snow and wind in between, I felt pretty good about skiing Wang Chung on Axtel again on the 17th. Tom and I were getting ready at the trailhead when we ran into our friend Austin, who decided to join us rather than snowboard alone. Last time, Luke and I skied Wang Chung and exited skier’s left next to the Pencil, but this time we chose to drop through the Eraser.

Tom took a cool photo of the moss that grows on Axtel’s trees, and I thought I would share it here:

I dropped in first. Tom’s photos:

After the terrific top pitch, we all dropped into the exit couloir, the Eraser. Wind had blown right up the couloir, making it polished hardpack that was just plain nasty and not fun at all.

Oh well, as our tracks show, the top was totally worth the price of the Eraser. The smaller tracks to the looker’s right belong to Crested Butte’s mayor, who skied it a couple of days before us. It was a great day in the middle of a period where people who don’t go out and search for the good snow weren’t finding any.
