Back to the ‘Ol Stomping Grounds

(Last Updated On: March 19, 2013)

When it comes to the non-alpine terrain in our home zone, our favorite area has to be Axtell. Last season, with the horrible snow year, we only made it there once, and it wasn’t very good. This year has been nearly as thin (though the skiing has been markedly better), so it wasn’t until this late point in the season that we finally made it out there. Considering that one late spring I skied Axtell 8 straight days, 2 days in 2 years feels positively weird.

Being close to town, Axtell’s snowpack is much different than what we found near Kebler Pass last week- meaning a whole lot thinner. The weather may feel springlike, but the steep North faces of Axtell harbor a faceted winter snowpack that deserves respect.

It was nice to be back. With good snow this weekend and another nice looking storm on the way, we may just get a few more days on Axtell after all.
