TR: Gary “The Hurricane” Hicks turns the big Four-Oh 3.3.09

(Last Updated On: March 6, 2009)

Earlier this week, I went up to a little spot that needs not be mentioned due to the existence of a not-so-legal hut in the woods. The reason for heading this way was to celebrate the birthday of my friend Gary. It ended up just being myself, Gary, and Danny on Tuesday, with some more folks heading up that way after work and to ski the next day. The best part about this trip is that the snowmobiles would be doing all the work getting our gear to the hut:

The weather lately hasn’t exactly been great, with some very warm (for early March) days, and wind, and then some clouds just to make sure things weren’t even sunny. This year has been one of the better ones overall in Crested Butte, but March has thus far been abysmal. Hopefully we get some snow this weekend, as we desperately need it. Anyway, we searched for some good snow and were able to find some decent conditions, as the sun tried to poke its’ way through the clouds. Gary x2:

I’ve looked at some of these lines for a long time, but haven’t hit any of them up yet. Maybe soon…

Sorry Danny, I just had to post this one 🙂

We got back to the hut, where we cracked some beers and waited for Ben and Luke to show up. Much love and respect for the builders of the hut. “Soul Sessions” sticker= Crested Butte Core.

For some reason, Ben thought that lighting fireworks would be a good idea. Thankfully, we didn’t burn the place down, with ourselves in it. We’d be in the “Darwin Awards” book for sure if we had.

I took off around 8:30, since space at the cabin was tight and I wasn’t really planning on staying out there anyway. Back at the trailhead, I discovered that my trailer light weren’t working, so I ended up leaving the trailer and snowmobile there. The next day, I discovered that it wasn’t my trailer lights at fault, but actually my truck since I had no working tail lights. Further examination at the shop revealed that a not-so-friendly critter grew an appetite for wiring, leaving me with a $200 bill and a new wiring harness for my truck.
