We’ve had another great week, snowfall wise, here in Crested Butte. A 1-2 punch of storms have left things very white, if not a little cold. Before the storm we had some great turns on recycled powder in the backcountry in an area I hadn’t skied in roughly 15 years. The last time I skied Coney’s, I was on trekkers, alpine boots, and 205 GS skis. Unfortunately, it had snowed a ton and with that gear and the relatively mellow slope angle of Coney’s, we couldn’t even make any turns. After that experience I vowed that I wouldn’t ski coney’s again. However, with some trepidation regarding snow stability elsewhere, I returned to Coney’s. It was better than I remember it…

As beautiful as the snow surface was, it was comprised of surface facets which may prove to be a problem for a while. They made for great skiing, however:
