Crested Butte Trails Update

(Last Updated On: June 8, 2012)

This will probably be the final trail update because, well, almost everything is open. Although on the other hand there is more to a trail update than simply saying a trail is open or not. Of the major trail routes, almost everything is open except Star Pass and 403. The uphill portion of 401 also has some snow patches although people are now riding it. (As always, check our guidebook for lots of riding options).

As I alluded to earlier, there is more to the trail report than simply what is open. So here’s some hints. It is hot and dry- and that’s made the trails exceedingly dusty and loose. However, just as aspect can be all important in skiing, different aspects are currently riding better than others- choose shady trails in dark timber right now for the best dirt. Downed trees are the other part of the equation right now. The motos tend to do most of the heavy lifting as far as cutting out trees goes, so it isn’t a bad idea to pick trails open to dirtbikes right now. On a recent ride of the Dyke trail, Brittany found about 10 downed trees, as an example.

That’s it for now- think rain!

The best thing about summer? Flip Flops!

  • 401 is definitely good to go- some trees on lower were already cut out. Get some before it all turns into moon dust.

  • Monarch Crest is “officially” open as well.
