TBT: Dark Canyon Hike

My birthday is at the end of September. In the Colorado high country, that means that my birthday usually occurs when the aspen leaves are at their peak. Since early August, I knew the very hike I wanted to do on my birthday – Dark Canyon – all 13 miles of it – or what turned out to be more like 14.5 miles. Though the leaves had peaked a bit early this year, the timing for the hike was actually perfect, with brilliant colors from beginning to end.

7 Favorite Fall Mountain Bike Rides in Crested Butte

When the calendar flips to September, most avid skiers start thinking of white fluffy snow. Admittedly, we’re among them. But, at the same time, fall is one our most favorite times in Crested Butte. TBT: Middle Ruby Range Traverse

It was Susan who came up with the vision of how to complete this hike. We drove to the bottom of Mount Owen and approached the edge of Scarp’s Ridge. When the Blue Lake trail split, we headed toward Star Pass and then traversed our way over to the high point on Scarp’s Ridge. From there, we followed along Scarp’s ridge until the bench that lead us back to our car at the bottom of Mt. Owen.

Pikes Peak has always been a bit of a favorite 14er of mine. I’ve hiked it multiple times, taken the cog, driven to the top, and skied off the top. It’s no coincidence that I saved Pikes Peak as my last peak when completing my 14er skiing project. So, when Frank’s sister and her kids were coming to visit from San Francisco, and Pikes Peak was brought up as something we could “do with the family”, I was in.

TR: Riding Agate Creek off Monarch Crest (21 July 2017)

Monarch Pass undoubtedly has some great mountain biking options. When most people think of the “Monarch Crest”, they think of the main series of trails – starting out on the Monarch Crest, descending Silver Creek, and then onto Rainbow Trail. But, there are plenty more options for mountain bikers including Fooses Creek, Greens Creek, and Starvation Creek – all of which also descend east of the Continental Divide. But, then there’s Agate Creek, often overlooked, because it descends west of the Divide. But, this trial is one mountain bikers should definitely check out!
