Belated TR: Buffalo Bill Days Parade
(Last Updated On: )
Two weeks ago, I spent some time in Denver for my Wilderness First Aid course and for my friend Laurel’s bachelorette party. During my time there, I stayed in Golden with Frank’s family. I don’t miss the Front Range, I’ll be honest. Even though I lived in Boulder for 10+ years, I don’t miss it one bit. But, I still love Golden.
I happened to be in Golden during Buffalo Bill days. This is something I kept missing when I did live on the Front Range, usually because I was escaping to the mountains every weekend. It’s ironic that I now live in the mountains, I escape to Golden.
The Buffalo Bill Days is probably most famous for it’s parade. The website states that it is derived “from the commemorative trail rides by the Buffalo Bill Saddle Club to Buffalo Bills grave on the top of Lookout Mountain which began sometime in the 1950s. Since everything Western was so popular in the 1960s the manager of the local Chamber of Commerce felt the trail rides could be expanded upon for an activity to promote Golden. So the large contingent of riders rode up the mountain one summer day and when they rode back down, they rode through town the first Buffalo Bill Days parade. Thereafter, the Chamber of Commerce expanded on the trail ride, making it into a community-wide event. Events were added such as an arts and crafts fair, food vendors, a street dance, parade, and a golf tournament. Over the years, the local volunteer Fire Department jumped in by cooking a pancake breakfast to start the days events and various organization s hosted spaghetti dinners for the community.” Now, it’s a full-fledged hour-and-a-half long parade that marches right through downtown Golden.
Pictures give the flavor of the parade best.
These guys made their horses dance!
I actually haven’t seen a parade in a long time. And this was a long one, and a fun one. If you’re around Golden during Buffalo Bill days, it’s definitely worth checking out.
