TR: Anthracites After Work (27 Oct 2010)

(Last Updated On: November 8, 2010)

Winter always comes best when it arrives with a bang. Winter did just that as temperatures suddenly changed from highs in the 60’s to the mid-20’s in just a couple of days. Along with the temperature change came the white fluff which blanketed trails that had been rideable earlier in the week. In just a weekend, bike season transformed into ski season. It’s always better that way 🙂

Mid-afternoon on Wednesday the clouds began to break revealing the suddenly wintery wonderful landscape. Giggling with glee I couldn’t help myself but to get out and play on this sparkly windless afternoon. Only being available after work, time was limited. So, Frank and I headed out to the Anthracites. The Kebler Pass road was still being plowed, allowing easy access to this favorite backcountry ski spot.

The snow had settled nicely, with a dense compact layer beneath, covered by a lighter layer of powder. Still, even this powder was relatively dense compared to Colorado standards.

As we neared the top, the trees were covered in rime. Looking toward Crested Butte in the distance.

The snow was fantastic and coverage was surprisingly good for early season. Better yet, I got the cure I needed. Four months is too long to wait. I finally got to ski some pow:)
