South Face Fun

(Last Updated On: October 20, 2013)

The clouds lifted and the sun popped out to reveal the beautiful scenery above and below.

Frank had skied the day before on a south face. So, despite the fact that normal logic would steer skiers toward north faces, I knew that some south faces were coming in to their own. While I had wanted to join Frank the previous day, the pain on my feet was still pronounced from the weekend’s adventures. I knew another day of rest was necessary to avoid massive amounts of foot pain. Thankfully, I was able to round my friend Jenny up for another adventure in the mountains.

We began skinning after the stream crossing.

But, sometimes the stream WAS the road.

We hoped that the clouds were lifting, as was forecasted by the meteorologists.

Just when we needed them, there were some “sucker holes” of sun.

We opted for the peak instead of a couloir, taking our chances on the weather. We hoped for another “sucker hole” of sun just when we needed it. But, after waiting patiently in howling wind on top of the ridgeline, the much needed sucker hole never arrived. Jen ready to ski.

Up high, the visibility was poor. But, it improved as we descended. Jen.

Me.

A look at the beautiful cirque that we were thankful to have successfully navigated through during a time of dense fog and low visibility.

The poor visibility was counteracted with superior snow conditions. Stable, deep and silky smooth, the snow could not have been better – especially for October. It’s been a great start to the season. Let’s hope that the snow continues to fly!
