TR: Uncle Bud’s hut

(Last Updated On: December 9, 2010)

In yesterday’s blog, I wrote about skiing in the areas surrounding the Uncle Bud’s hut. Today, I’ll focus on the actual hut itself.

Uncle Bud’s hut is part of the prestigious 10th Mountain Division Hut system. This system was built to commemorate the 10th Mountain Division, a section of the army which trained in the Colorado Mountains (on skis) for winter combat. They are most famous for their contributions to WWII. Many 10th Mountain Division members went on to play important roles in developing ski areas and establishing skiing as the recreational sport that it is today. The Uncle Bud hut was built in 1989 to commemorate the life of Bud Winter, who was a passionate member of the 10th Mountain Division. Only 20 years old, Bud gave his life to help save others while fighting in the mountains of Italy in 1945.

The inside of the hut is well equipped. The kitchen has a pump for water, a wood burning stove and two gas burners.

Another wood burning stove is in the living room area.

The sleeping quarters are located upstairs. There are 16 different beds located in three different rooms. Plenty of couch space in the living room area is also available.

Two bathrooms are located beside the hut. These are more-or-less fancy outhouses. Still, they are clean, and there is a wooden walkway from the hut so you don’t even need to put on your boots!

Galena beckons us with beautiful ski lines easily seen from the windows of the hut.

But, alas, the snow was not ready for this kind of skiing. We stuck to mellower lines.

Arbony and Rhodes dug out the fire pit and built a fire.

But, the real reason why we were there was for our friend, Matt. It was his 50th birthday! This resulted in a feast meant for gods. But, we had it in the middle of the mountains.

Lobster, crab legs, and fillet mignon were on the menu!

This was followed by a chocolate mousse cake! Matt getting ready to blow out the candles…

Happy 50th Matt! Thanks for having us along for the celebration!
