{"id":6793,"date":"2014-03-16T21:04:01","date_gmt":"2014-03-17T03:04:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/14erskiers.com\/blog\/?p=6793"},"modified":"2014-03-16T21:10:16","modified_gmt":"2014-03-17T03:10:16","slug":"country-club-couloir-3-9-14","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/14erskiers.com\/blog\/2014\/03\/country-club-couloir-3-9-14\/","title":{"rendered":"Country Club Couloir  3.9.14"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Since moving to Crested Butte roughly 20 years ago, I&#8217;ve looked up at the backside of Crested Butte and wondered about the skiing potential.  The most obvious line is the Country Club Couloir, aka Skyland couloir, but before last weekend, I hadn&#8217;t skied it yet.  Unlike the more straightforward (but still difficult to navigate) <a href=\"https:\/\/14erskiers.com\/blog\/2011\/01\/buckhorn-couloir-1-26-11\/\">Buckhorn Couloir<\/a>, the CCC is often done with a little bit of ropework.  South facing and in the low snow zone that the ski area sits in, the line needs at least an average year.  After the past two rough years, this year has been relatively deep, and the CCC was definitely in.<\/p>\n<p>The Line:<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/14erskiers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/538.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/14erskiers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/538.jpg\" alt=\"country club or skyland couloir\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6789\" srcset=\"https:\/\/14erskiers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/538.jpg 800w, https:\/\/14erskiers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/538-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>While the top of this line is the ski area, CBMR&#8217;s closed boundary meant that we would be ascending from Brush Creek. If this pitch faced North, it would be one of my favorites.  As it was, we still had nice corn snow. The rap is straighforward, thanks to the perfectly positioned tree. With crampons and an axe, the downclimb would also be easy. Upon further review, he decided maybe not, and we skied a very short pitch. Even after this rap, the couloir again narrowed to pretty much exactly 180cm, though we skied through that one.
