The actual dates of summer may technically be from June 21st to September 21st or so according to the Earth’s spin. But, people will tell you otherwise. For schoolchildren, summer starts when school gets out in the spring and ends the moment they return to school in the “fall”. For mountain folk, summer starts when it stops freezing at night and normal people can walk around in t-shirts during the day, and ends with the first regular frosts. That’s why summer is a funny thing. What is summer depends on who you are and where you live.

I’m a teacher, so where does that leave me? I choose blend of the above. As a teacher in a mountain town, summer does not typically begin the moment school gets out in the spring. For me, summer begins when I no longer feel like the snow is worth skiing on a regular basis. This can happen as early as May, or it can go as late as July. On the flip side, like the school children, summer ends when I return to school.

I returned to school yesterday. Therefore, my summer is officially over, despite what my calendar says about the equinox a month from now.

While I have spent some of my summer working, I have spent a good deal of it also playing in the outdoors. Many of my adventures I have recorded on this blog, but most of them I have not. Nevertheless, my camera is often an accessory when I venture outside. And this summer was particularly photogenic with the plethora of extra-magnificent wildflowers. So, here’s my summer wrap-up – a collection of photos to share from various places and spaces along the way.

Wildflower Stoke
White Monkshood.

Sunflowers & lupine.

White germanium.

Columbine.

Alpine tundra decorated in purple.

Thistle.

Fireweed.

Paint brush and lupine surrounding the white death camas, called as such due to it’s poisonous properties.

Mountain Stoke.

Dog Stoke
Eddy, the dog which I borrow, and who has become my best hiking friend!

Eddy swimming in Copley Lake.

So, while my summer adventures have come to an end, there’s still plenty of adventures left before the snow flies.
