With low avalanche danger, it was time to ski high and go a little bigger than we typically think in December.  <\/p>\n<p>Alex skinning.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/14erskiers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/mickeys_9dec2014\/IMG_6515alexskin.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" alt=\"Alex Riedman skinning in the Crested Butte backcountry\" class=\"alignnone\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I was challenged in finding ski partners on this particular Tuesday, and Pete kindly let me tag along on his adventure with Mike.  Then, late the night before, my friend Alex decided to not go ride her bike and go skiing instead.  So, it was a foursome.<\/p>\n<p>It was a beautiful day with a light breeze on the ridge.  But, it was calm enough to take some time to enjoy the views, like this one of Mineral Point.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/14erskiers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/mickeys_9dec2014\/IMG_6525mineral.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"501\" alt=\"View of Mineral Point while backcountry skiing in Crested Butte.\" class=\"alignnone\" \/><\/p>\n<p><!--more  READ MORE!--><\/p>\n<p>The surrounding area was looking pretty darned good for being devoid of significant snowfall for nearly two weeks.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/14erskiers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/mickeys_9dec2014\/IMG_6527poverty.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" alt=\"Poverty Gulch in the Crested Butte backcountry.\" class=\"alignnone\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I call this the <a href=\"https:\/\/14erskiers.com\/blog\/2007\/11\/memories-year-ago-today\/\" target=\"_blank\">Cascade Couloir<\/a>, Pete calls it the Gnar Couloir.  A rappel is needed for the entrance, making it a wonderfully fun ski mountaineering line.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/14erskiers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/mickeys_9dec2014\/IMG_6527cascadecouloir.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"598\" alt=\"Cascade Couloir in the Crested Butte backcountry.\" class=\"alignnone\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We traveled for quite some time on the ridge.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/14erskiers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/mickeys_9dec2014\/IMG_6531alexonridge.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" alt=\"Alex Riedman skinning on Purple ridge near Crested Butte.\" class=\"alignnone\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t know if this lake has a name, but I call it Chasm pond.  In the summer it looks like a bottomless hole of water.  Pete calls it Death Lake.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/14erskiers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/mickeys_9dec2014\/IMG_6533lake.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"596\" alt=\"Chasm pond in the Crested Butte backcountry.\" class=\"alignnone\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A beautiful ridge on a beautiful day.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/14erskiers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/mickeys_9dec2014\/IMG_6536ridgebig.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"502\" alt=\"Purple Ridge in the Crested Butte backcountry.\" class=\"alignnone\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This is &#8220;Mickey&#8217;s&#8221;.  I&#8217;m told that a person named Mickey skied it solo back in the day and survived an avalanche.  If anyone can confirm this or knows more details, please share. But, in actuality they were pretty good &#8211; if you skied fast enough to break the zipper crust.
