But, weather would determine what we chose to ski.  When we awoke the next morning, it was code blue, and the Fin on Republic sucked us back in.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/14erskiers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/cookecity_2013\/P1290524fin.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" alt=\"Backcountry skiing near Cooke City, Montana\" class=\"alignnone size-large\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Frank and I headed out with our friends Tony and Doug.  We made the slog through the forested skin track which eventually opened up to this:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/14erskiers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/cookecity_2013\/IMG_0339fin.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"auto\" alt=\"Backcountry skiing near Cooke City, Montana\" class=\"alignnone size-large\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Yes, the Fin had been skied &#8211; quite a lot lately.  But, the tracks didn&#8217;t make it any less alluring.  These &#8220;spines&#8221; looked particularly interesting.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/14erskiers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/cookecity_2013\/IMG_0338spines.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"auto\" alt=\"Backcountry skiing near Cooke City, Montana\" class=\"alignnone size-large\" \/><\/p>\n<p><!--more Read more--><\/p>\n<p>From the eastern side of the basin, there are several ways to approach the Fin, which lies on the west side. We were going back up for more. He has dubbed them State Line Spines, as these lie on the border between Wyoming and Montana. We still had to make our way out of the basin, and descend the couloirs we skied the previous day. With it&#8217;s easy access and proximity to the town, it beckons skiers who arrive in Cooke City.  But, we knew a whole lot more was waiting for us.  We just had to head a little bit more northeast.  We went to bed with dreams of powder turns in our heads&#8230;..<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>Update: In April, 2018 our friend Tony <a href=\"https:\/\/14erskiers.com\/blog\/2018\/04\/tony-saracelli-a-tribute\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">perished in an avalanche<\/a> skiing solo outside the boundaries at Bridger Bowl.
