Look for them on Thursdays!

Doubletop is well known by Crested Butte locals as “double up, no down”. As in, it’s uphill both ways. And it does feel that way, to be sure, if you’re riding the whole thing. But if you catch the right segment, it’s sometimes downhill the whole way. With a couple of small segments needed for our Trailquest goals, Brittany and I tackled one such section last fall.

We headed up the Walrod Wall, then up 412, which was amazing while the aspen leaves were changing.

Next up was 405.3A (great name, eh?), which was a wall in its own right. From there, though, we were onto the gravy- all downhill on a glorious fall day. First, we had some traversing, high in the alpine. If you’ve been on doubletop in a thunderstorm like I have, that’s all you can remember for as long as you ride that trail (it’s been over 20 years for me). No thunderstorms on this day, however.

One thing about Doubletop- it always keeps you guessing. Sometimes, that means some really steep and loose sections, like these ones. Totally rideable, there are actually a lot of fun. And of course we finished off on the Warm Springs trail, which had some great re-routes last year.
