TBT: Mountain Biking Boss Lake (3 Sept 2017)

Monarch Pass harbors some of the best alpine mountain biking in Colorado. But, since most trails are on the south side of Highway 50, most mountain bikers find themselves concentrated there. What happens if you ride on the north side of the highway? You’ll encounter even more (and better) scenery, some beautiful alpine lakes, and the most challenging, yet lengthy, descent that this area has to offer. It’s a worthy visit for those up for adventure!
The first part of the ride takes you through a lovely forest.
After passing through Monarch Ski Area, the Continental Divide Trail opens up to some splendid scenery.
The Continental Divide Trail is very “cross-country” for these first few miles. But, it’s still a fantastic ride. Frank.

And then we started to descend the ridge of Bald Mountain, toward a stunning alpine lake. Here, the riding got a lot more technical. Me.

The riding remained technical as we entered treeline.
Hunt Lake.
But, we still had a lot further to go….
The actual Boss Lake….
And the descent got even better afterward…
Even the forest was beautiful.

Mountain biking Boss Lake is best done as a shuttle beginning at the top of Monarch Pass and ending on Highway 50 near Monarch Lodge.
