TBT TR: Mount Trelease (30 April 2016)

(Last Updated On: December 22, 2016)

This post is part of a Throwback Thursday series featuring trip reports that we haven’t had a chance to write about until now! Look for them at least every other Thursday!

In Colorado, spring is one of the wettest seasons. In recent years it seems that Colorado has seen a nice dose of the white stuff being emptied onto the high peaks. Last year, a late April storm unloaded a foot of fresh in the mountains. My friend Susan and I met in the Front Range and had it in mind to ski some backcountry lines closer to Arapahoe Basin. But, we were subject to the Front Range cluster and the holders of the Epic Pass. Traffic to A-Basin was backed up all the way to the Keystone lots. Forget about parking on the side of the road to go backcountry skiing – people were parking there to go to A-Basin and walking miles to get there. While I am always glad to see people out and about enjoying turns especially later in the year, this was far too much.

After driving for an hour from Keystone to A-Basin, we decided to just keep on going. We went up and over Loveland Pass, where the I-70 traffic was a junk show. We crossed the highway, and headed over to Mount Trelease where we found plenty of peace and solace while the cars stood still on the highway.

Into the forest we went. Susan.

We did two laps on Trelease, first heading over to the NE side. Susan enjoying some good pow-pow.

The second lap brought us over to the south side. The storm snow still skied excellent despite the fact that it was nearly May.

While Mount Trelease can certainly provide some nice spots for pow-day skiing, there are also places that are prone to avalanches on this peak. Be careful where you ski and plan your routes to avoid this terrain. Otherwise, we hope ya’ll get to enjoy some Christmas powder!
