January 2015 Crested Butte Backcountry Round-up

(Last Updated On: February 8, 2015)

January 2015 was a tough month for Colorado skiing. In a decent month, I think 50″ of new snow is about average. In January 2015, I’m not even sure if our backcountry zones, which usually see tons of snow, got half that amount. The funny thing is, every time we went out, it was actually pretty good. I guess the other nice aspect is that the avalanche danger tends to decrease in the absence of new snow (or wind). That said, I’d really like to see a 100″ storm cycle come through sometime soon.

Sometimes when we go out, we don’t get enough quality photos for a stand-alone post, so that’s where this one comes in. January 8 was a warm day, much like we’re seeing now in the early part of February. We wanted to go into the alpine, but we weren’t totally sold on the stability, so we went for the south face of Cascade. The skintrack:

My turn.

On January 15, Brittany and I spent most of the day scouting out new terrain- hopefully we’ll get out there on another day. We still had some time for a quick tour, however, so we went to AMR. Brittany:

That’s about it for the January round-up. Hopefully things change soon, and our February reports will get a little more exciting. In any case, we have a trip coming up, and we should have some interesting things to talk about soon.
