Buckhorn Couloir 1.26.11

Posted by – January 31, 2011

Crested Butte (the mountain) has a wide range of great skiing opportunities besides the terrific in-bounds terrain. Unfortunately, the area outside the boundaries is also steep, complicated, and avalanche-prone terrain, and much of it ends up on private property, so Crested Butte has always had a closed boundary policy. I’d like to think that someday that might change, and skiers could ski down lines like the Terminator chutes with ropes and gear, but that’s probably too progressive of an outlook- after all, this isn’t Europe is it? In any case, the terrain is still accessible from outside the boundaries, so Pete Sowar, John Jasper and I headed out to ski the South facing “Buckhorn Couloir” last week amidst improving avalanche conditions and sunny skies.

Fog covered the lower valley, which stayed cold in an inversion while we basked in the sun up high.

We topped out near the summit of the mountain, where several skiers were taking advantage of the conditions by ascending the peak, an in-bounds run here in Crested Butte.

After a quick snack, we headed through the forest towards the couloir, a line each of us had skied at least once. Pete:

The entrance to the couloir is tight and intricate, and sometimes the best route doesn’t follow the couloir exactly down the center. JJ dropping in:

Pillow Palace 1.27.11

Posted by – January 28, 2011

After last Saturday’s storm, we received quite a bit of wind here in the Crested Butte area, making for some tricky avalanche conditions which are starting to improve with our sunny weather, and of course finding the right aspects to ski has been a challenge as well. The heavily treed Pillow Palace seemed like a good sheltered choice, and we actually found some good skiing up higher as well. The Pillow Palace is an interesting ski, as you constantly traverse one way or the other looking for fun pillows to play on, skiing short pitches along the way. I know some people are over the POV thing, but it’s really the best way to document this kind of treed terrain. The few photos I did get are in a slideshow at the start of the POV. Hope you like it!

Axtel 1.12 and 1.14.11

Posted by – January 25, 2011

Between our trip to Jackson and too much time spent skiing pow at the area, this TR is a little late, but still worthwhile. Axtel is probably my favorite mountain locally, with so many options including steep tree skiing that we can actually do in the winter in powder here in Colorado. 1st and 2nd bowls are tough to get good pictures of, so the POV is probably a better representation of the skiing we do there. It was deep (find Tom’s helmet):

Purple Palace November 2010

Posted by – November 26, 2010

This is a quick video from a couple different days in the palace. The first was a cloudy, stormy day off the top of the ridge on November 16. The second half of the video is from an equally snowy day, but not off the ridge, on November 21st. This video has a great (and for those who know me, Rare!) ending, so check it out.

El Nino Favored the Southwest

Posted by – November 21, 2010

I made a mistake last season. Though I was vaguely aware that the Southern Utah desert was getting hammered with snow, I never went down there to check it out. I wish I would have. The terrain there is beautiful and fascinating in any season, and during last year’s El Nino, it was also very skiable. Next time.

Watch this video. Great skiing, great production, everything about it is great. Can’t embed it, but here’s the link: http://inspiredmedia.tv/1011/inspired-media-tv/provo-bros/

Biking Through The Snow In Crested Butte 10.26.10

Posted by – October 27, 2010

Growing up in the foothills West of Denver, my friends and I would often go out for bike rides in the snow. I guess it sounds dumb on the surface, but so does getting up at 1am to ski a 14er, or skiing off a cliff and landing in powder. With just the right amount of snow, snow biking can be really fun. Sad for the biking, but great for the skiing, there was a bit too much for ideal snow biking. :)

A good snow bike mission starts with a good hot beverage. For me, that meant some Mate de Coca:

Bike shoes aren’t made for warmth, by any means, so before biking off into the snow, you’ve got to protect your feet somehow. While there are products out there, I just use plastic bags as a vapor barrier since I don’t do that much riding in winter. It works so much better than one might think:

With that, I was off towards Gold Link…

TR: Cement Mountain Trail 8.13.10

Posted by – August 26, 2010

The Cement Mountain Trail starts from the summit of 12,201′ Cement Mountain. While the trail is difficult to follow at first, once it’s found the trail is quite distinct- almost a doubletrack by the bottom, in fact. I rode this trail for the first time a few years ago and thought it was OK- but for whatever reason I really liked this trail a lot this time around. If nothing else, how many rides start at the summit of a 12,000′ peak? I’ve hike-a-biked to the summit from the highpoint of the Julie Andrews trail as well as the top of the Roaring Judy trail- either way it’s a long hike. This summer may be the last to legally ride this trail, as the new Forest Service Management Plan will “decommission” this trail soon. So if you’re looking for something new, check it out soon!

Starvation Creek To Agate Creek 8.15.10

Posted by – August 24, 2010

After riding Starvation Creek for the first time on the last day of July, I was pretty stoked not just because the trail was easily one of my new favorites, but also because I knew Starvation Creek would lend itself nicely to some combinations with other rides. Best of all, these combos wouldn’t involve a shuttle like so many Monarch Pass area rides do. Skip to the bottom and watch the video POV if you’re not interested in words and photos. We choose to start our ride in the town of Sargeants on the West side of Marshall Pass. While I have ridden up the East side of the Pass, this marked my first time up the West side. Being a former railroad grade, Marshall Pass is quite gentle and easy as you slowly gain elevation to the 10,842′ summit.

Deadman’s Video TR

Posted by – August 19, 2010

The final video from our ride of “XX”, Bear Creek, and finally, Deadman’s. Deadman’s is well known for its switchbacks, so rather than edit the video too much, I left it whole so inquiring minds who want to know can count the switchbacks. So get out your pencils, enjoy Modest Mouse, and start counting. Because this inquiring mind wants to know just how many switchbacks Deadman’s has…

Continued from the “Trail That Needs a Name” post, here’s a Bear Creek video TR, always one of my favorites in the area. Bear is just so fast and flowy…
