Merry Christmas everyone!
So, Brittany and I decided that our Christmas gift to one another would be the purchase, together, of a GPS. Our preliminary search at REI back at Thanksgiving left us underwhelmed with the choices, features, and prices of the units we looked at there. So, the question for you 14erskiers out there is this: Which GPS should we buy? Help us out here, throw out some choices for us…
Thanks!

You asked… My personal choice for ME (emphasis added) is the Oregon 300.. I want a GPS unit to perform a variety of functions and this unit does it all for me. I can use it on my motorcycle or car (give turn by turn directions with optional software), connect to my HR monitor and cycling kit, download topographic maps, change batteries, touch screen (works with gloves), will run off car/motorcycle power, compass, barometric altimeter, etc.. My second choice is the garmin 60csx, bit heavier and smaller screen but does the same as the 300. I looked at and used the Magellan triton, not worth the packaging IMO. I also left out the 400 oregon series because I would rather buy the topo maps on a DVD because the are UPDATEABLE where maps on sd cards are not. Like I stated I am looking for one unit to do a lot. In a perfect world I would have a smaller unit for my bicycle (705 so I can see the trail and get all the info), trail gps and a car gps but that is a lot of $$.
Good question, interested to hear peoples thoughts. I plan on getting a new one in the next couple months as well (left my 10 year old etrex in the flattops this summer
) I intially thought the Oregon 400t was going to be it, until I read the large amount of reviews concerning the visibility of the screen in daylight. I think the 60csx is the way to go unless they fix the screen issue…
Thanks for the thoughts, Greg and Forrest. It certainly isn’t easy finding one that does everything and doesn’t cost an arm and a leg, especially when you have to buy maps as well. Seems like garmin really has a stranglehold on the market right now..
