For those of you wondering, the Azores are a group of islands on the mid-Atlantic ocean ridge that belong to Portugal. They are volcanic islands, and similar to Hawaii, but not tropical. We owe our inspiration to go to Azores entirely to Anthony Bourdain because he went to the Azores on one of his shows. Spain had already been a consideration, so it seemed easy to throw the two destinations together.

When we were looking for a honeymoon destination, we were looking for something that was off-the-beaten path. But, at the same time, we didn’t want to deal with the hassles of something like third-world travel on our honeymoon. So, when we saw Anthony Bourdain’s show on the Azores, we knew that was the perfect spot. I mean, most people in America don’t even know where that is. So, it must be just what we’re looking for :)

We have promised ourselves not to spend much time on the Internet while we are on our honeymoon. But, I can promise a couple of updates along the way. So, stay tuned :)

More Pemberton Backcountry

Check out Frank’s TR from my last day skiing Pemberton backcountry. It was a sunny day, but ridiculously frigid.

TR: Whistler and Vancouver (25 & 27 Feb 2011)

Posted by – March 17, 2011

For last day of skiing in BC, we headed to Blackcomb. I’d skied there a few years earlier, but it was during a storm cycle and I never actually saw the mountain. It was good to be able to see this time. And what views we had! We kept the camera in the pocket most of the time as it was frigid once again. However, I couldn’t resist whipping it out for a few scenics.

After our excellent first day of skiing Pemberton backcountry, we woke up the next morning to snow. We headed to an area we will call Luna Creek.

TR: Pemberton Backcountry (20 Feb 2011)

Posted by – March 3, 2011

After a long day of traveling to from Crested Butte to Pemberton, I was glad to meet up with Frank who had left 6 days earlier, traveling by car with the snowmobile. We were both ready for the goods. A long (and annoyingly bumpy) snowmobile ride lead us to a sweet zone.

Random Pics

Posted by – February 17, 2011

It’s been awhile since we’ve posted. It’s not that we haven’t been out and about enjoying our snow. No, it’s been just the opposite. Our free time has been spent having fun:)

Frank left early Tuesday morning for the long drive toward Pemberton, just a half an hour away from Whistler. He’ll be enjoying life there for the next month or so. Thankfully, I will be able to join him for a week of it, as I fly north on Saturday. We’ll be joining up with (and invading the space of) our friends John and Susan. Thanks guys. Can’t wait for the fun :)

Of course, we’ll be posting up a few pics here and there, and hopefully several rounds of TR’s, from our adventures in Canada. But, until then, here’s a few random pics we’ve taken in the last couple of weeks to tide you over :)

TR: We’re going to Jackson – MLK whirlwind

Posted by – January 21, 2011

It’s Friday and I’m still recovering from last weekend’s whirlwind tour of Jackson Hole. A storm cycle was setting to hit up north and we timed it perfectly. With a floor to crash on and $59 tickets (a deal for all Crested Butte pass-holders), it was a low budget trip for us. After rolling into Jackson around 10:30 in the morning, we hit up the resort right away. Here’s what we found through the weekend….

TR: Uncle Bud’s hut

Posted by – December 10, 2010

In yesterday’s blog, I wrote about skiing in the areas surrounding the Uncle Bud’s hut. Today, I’ll focus on the actual hut itself.

Uncle Bud’s hut is part of the prestigious 10th Mountain Division Hut system. This system was built to commemorate the 10th Mountain Division, a section of the army which trained in the Colorado Mountains (on skis) for winter combat. They are most famous for their contributions to WWII. Many 10th Mountain Division members went on to play important roles in developing ski areas and establishing skiing as the recreational sport that it is today. The Uncle Bud hut was built in 1989 to commemorate the life of Bud Winter, who was a passionate member of the 10th Mountain Division. Only 20 years old, Bud gave his life to help save others while fighting in the mountains of Italy in 1945.

TR: Skiing from Uncle Bud’s hut

Posted by – December 9, 2010

Last weekend, Frank and I joined 12 other people on a hut trip to Uncle Bud’s hut. The occasion? Our friend Matt, whom we met on Little Bear last year and has been a reliable ski partner since, was turning 50!

This hut is part of the 10th Mountain Division system and is located outside of Leadville. I will post another blog on the great features of the Uncle Bud’s hut as well as our elaborate birthday celebration. But, today’s blog will focus on the skiing.

Our mouths drooled over lines like this.
