TR: Atlantic Peak (24 June 2011)

Posted by – July 27, 2011

Before we left for our honeymoon, I knew that when we came back, I would be trading the bike in place of the skis. But, I also knew that my ski season wouldn’t be completely over. With snow still plentiful in the high peaks, skiing year-round is not only a real possibility, but a fun possibility with the decent summer snow. So, skiing had to happen in July.

The choice of our July date was not coincidental either. Our dear friend Lacy passed away enjoying his love for skiing exactly a year before. We wanted to honor Lacy’s life by doing what he would probably be doing if he was with us today. Lacy loved skiing, no matter where or what time of year. It seemed appropriate to celebrate his life on top of a beautiful snow-capped peak.

Why Atlantic Peak? We debated returning to Democrat to ski one of Lacy’s favorite lines. But, Lacy also liked to explore. So, why not try something new, especially in a year where snow is sticking to the peaks for longer than usual. After seeing our friend Fritz’s post about Atlantic, it seemed like a good choice.

Atlantic Peak is one of those peaks that goes easily unnoticed. In the shadow of Quandry, and often overlooked by it’s slightly larger and gnarlier neighbor, Pacific Peak, Atlantic rises to a fair height itself with and elevation of 13,841′. But, from McCullough Gulch, Atlantic’s true capabilities come to view.

Frank and I met up with Kim and her friend Andy near the Quandary trailhead. We laughed as we drove by car after car parked along side the road, from hikers heading for this “easy” fourteener. We arrived to our trailhead and counted five cars. Much better. The hike was beautiful and wildflowers tempted us, like these Columbines.

This north facing line off of Quandary’s east ridge looks like a nice possibility for another year.

Past the unnamed lake at 11,900′ the trail turned faint. Even with cairns, route-finding was a tad difficult. Following the faint climbers trail leads up the southern branch of upper McCullough Gulch. In retrospect, it would have been better to leave the trail shortly after the lake and follow the northern branch which would be a more direct route to our peak. Less willows in this branch also make for easy off-trail travel. Needless to say, we were happy when our line came into view. Fletcher (another high 13er) on the left, Atlantic on the right.

Updated Wish List

Posted by – April 18, 2011

It’s good to have goals. Goals in all aspects of your life give you something to look forward to. When you feel like you have lost your way, you can revisit your goals. They can help keep you on the right path.

Most of you are aware of my goal to ski all of Colorado’s 14ers. I have been working toward this goal since April 2006. With only two more fourteeners remaining- Pyramid and Pikes Peak- I hope to finish this goal this year. But, Mother Nature has to be cooperative. Pyramid is a serious line with serious consequences. I have to be patient and wait for the right conditions- for both avalanche and weather. Sure, I have skied Capitol, the hardest Colorado fourteener climb/ski. But, Pyramid still looms over my head. I’ve tried it twice and hope “the third time is the charm”. I’ve been lucky in my fourteener attempts. I have not had to go for any more than twice, except for Pyramid. Pyramid is my nemesis. Yet, I’m really excited to ski it. Those of you who are anxiously waiting- believe me, I’m more anxious. The way I see it, I’ll either ski both Pyramid and Pikes this year, or neither. It’s up to Mother Nature really. And my patience.

But, the fourteeners aren’t my only ski goal. In February, 2009, I created a wish list of other things I wanted to ski. Due to tearing my ACL, none got checked off the list in 2009. But, since then, I’ve successfully tackled six of the peaks on my list. With this in mind, I decided that it was time to revisit my wish list- time for an update. This update has two parts- 1) a reflection of what I’ve done and 2) what I still want to do.

All photos by Frank or Brittany unless otherwise specified

The ones I’ve crossed off my list since 2009 include….

1) Owen (tallest in photo) and 2) Purple Peak (in front, to the right of Owen)

3) Teocalli

Season in Review Part II

Posted by – July 20, 2010

See Part I

March is one of my favorite months. The days get longer, the snow stays good and often is quite stable… it’s the time for long tours and big lines.

March
March opened up with a bang with a long tour beginning at Mt. Emmons, and then skiing Scarps and Peeler.

I was able to tick a few more lines off of my wish list, like the East Face of Gothic

and Teocalli.

TR: Treasury Raid on the Fourth of July

Posted by – July 5, 2010

Kim and I have been talking about skiing on the 4th of July since our trip to Grizzly together. It wasn’t difficult to get her to make the trip up to Crested Butte from Boulder. I just had to promise her a little bit of biking and a little bit of skiing. I think she got what she came for :)

Frank decided to join us too. Our destination was the Wine Bottle couloirs off the north face of Treasury. We drove up to Paradise Divide, parked there, and set out on foot.

We followed the road toward Yule Pass. Kim and Frank.

But we eventually ascended up to the ridge, following that ridge to the summit of Treasury. Frank and I following the ridge.

Frank and I finally got around to actually skiing this line this past Sunday.

Conditions were fantastic, as we had a little of this the night before…

And woke up to this.

TR: Ice Mountain (6 June 2010)

Posted by – June 10, 2010

Ice Mountain has been on my list for quite some time. After accomplishing my latest fourteener targets Memorial Day weekend, I set my sights on some other goals, and the Refrigerator couloir on Ice was one high on my list.

It wasn’t hard to persuade Frank, Jarrett Luttrell, Ben Conners, and Matt Kamper to join. As is usual, we started out before dawn, around 4:30 am.
