Month: October 2008

Anticipation

Posted by – October 29, 2008

I thought I’d give everyone a status report on this blog. This blog is alive! And it has been since September. Yet, there have been very few new posts. Why, you ask? Well, it’s because of this….

The fall is always a season of anticipation because winter is right around the corner. But, the fall is usually fun because you get to “sneak” a few turns on snow somewhere. But, this fall season has left me utterly depressed and unsatisfied. Usually, by now, I’ve skied at least once on snow. However, the end of October is just a couple of days away and it looks like I won’t be skiing before the end of the month! No skiing before Halloween???? That’s a crazy concept! I can’t even fathom it, yet I’m living in it at this very moment!

We’ve seen a few snow flakes and a few storms here in the Butte, but nothing has amounted to a good amount to actually warrant dragging out the skis. Yet, on the Front Range, people are already skiing at resorts. And over in Aspen, people are skiing 14ers. I’m jealous, I say!

No matter what, I can’t seem to get rid of the “ants in my pants”. I just want to ski. It’s time. Bring on some snow. The desire to ski is becoming stronger and stronger each day this month that I do not ski, which makes it harder and harder to actually enjoy the “Indian Summer” we are having. Sure, I’ve been riding my bike, but somehow riding a bike isn’t satisfying now. It just doesn’t replace the desire to be on two planks again, rushing over that beautiful white stuff we call snow.

Call it desperation. Call me spoiled. Say anything you want about these rambles because, yeah, you’re probably right. But I thought a little rambling would help release these “ants in my pants”. I think I was wrong though, because I think it actually made it worse! :)

At any rate, the lack of being able to ski has left me with a tad bit of free time on my hands. With that time, I’ll be working on bringing this blog up to date. I’m working on transferring my entries from my old Thrillhead Blog (no longer existant) from the last year to this blog. I’ve already transferred the entries from October and November 2007, which left me again desperate for snow. I’ll be working on the remaining entries soon. And I will also update the blog with my summer adventures to South Carolina and the Ukraine.

Thanks again for reading my rambles! ;)

Mom visits Colorado, Oct. 2-6

Posted by – October 11, 2008

My mom came to visit just in time to see the end of our fall peak here in the mountains of Colorado.

We started her visit by visiting the beautiful town of Ouray. From there, we headed back to Crested Butte. Unfortunately, the weather was not very cooperative. Everyone in the town of Crested Butte was excited for and expecting their first real snowstorm of the season. But what came from the winter storm warning was mostly a bunch of rain.

When the sun did manage to come out on Sunday afternoon, however, we could see that we were surrounded by mountains covered in a blanket of snow.

And the fall leaves were looking particularly magnificent in the crisp light.

We took a little drive over Ohio pass were we enjoyed stunning the scenery.

Wish the weather had cooperated a bit more, but it was great to have my mom here for a long weekend!

It’s snowing yellow Aspen leaves!

Posted by – October 1, 2008

Today I had a beautiful experience. I was working outside today, alone, surrounded by Aspen trees. The weather was sunny and comfortably warm, but not hot. Suddenly, a gust of wind came. And the gust kept coming. The gust brought a present: the flickering tick of the yellow leaves in the trees, and suddenly I was surrounded by yellow. It was snowing yellow Aspen leaves. I smiled, awakened from the drone of work by the beautiful spectacle. I smiled not only because of the beauty, but because it was fall. And everyone knows what comes after fall…. winter is just around the corner.

Fall is exciting in Crested Butte. During the day, people where T-shirts and shorts. But at night, everyone sports their puffies. It’s always a good feeling when you break out the puffy for the first time. Fall is a time of anticipation for the people of Crested Butte. The typical September showings of the latest Two-Planks and Matchsticks Productions ski movies send jitters through the minds of the Buttians. We love our snow here. The Vinotok ceremony is as much a reminder that fall is here as it is a celebration of winter.

Knowing that winter is so close can make it difficult to appreciate this spectacular time of year. But the wind woke me up today and reminded me. Because of that, I’d like to share some photos taken this past weekend when I rode the Dyke Trail with my friend Sonya and her friend Julie.
