#6: It’s a postcard

Every time I visit the town of Crested Butte, I find scenes that make me feel like I’m traveling in a post card. I don’t always have a camera with me, and the pics below don’t do the town justics. But, I’ll post them anyway.

#8:The snowbanks are too big and my car keeps getting buried

This should probably be higher on the list than at #8, but this seems particularly appropriate now… because there is a nuclear winter happening how in Crested Butte!

Earlier this week, the snowbanks were already above my head:

I don’t know where they’re going to put the snow that’s falling now!

In December, my car kept getting buried:

Yesterday my car looked like this in the afternoon (partail unburial):

I came back later that evening to find six more inches of snow on my car, and unburied it.

This morning, there was another 8 inches or so of snow on my car. I commenced the unburying process, as I had to leave Crested Butte today. Had I stayed, my car would look like this:

Frank took this picture of his parking lot this afternoon. There really are two cars buried under there! :)

#9: The buses are a work of art

The buses are frequent, easy to use, and FREE :) So, no worries about driving from the mountain into town for dinner/drinks and back. Just take the bus! It’s worth it too because the police really crack down here on DUI’s. I suppose they should when the public transportation system is so easy!

Right now I’m glad the buses are running because I don’t want to dig out my car from the foot of freshly fallen snow that keeps on coming :) …. YES!!!!

Plus, the buses are all unique. Each one is painted with it’s own design. They all are wonderful. Everytime you look at one you notice something a little different.

Some examples of the painted buses:

#10: The Local Radio Station tells you everything you need to know!

The local radio station in Crested Butte is KBUT, run mostly by volunteer DJ’s from the community. The volunteers usually contribute to running a two hour radio show once a week.

The kind of music you’ll hear being played on KBUT depends largely on the DJ, and the mood of the DJ as well. But I usually hear more songs I have never heard before in my life on this radio station. It certainly forces you to expand your horizons a bit!

The radio station is not only a source of music, but is also a community source for different bits of information. For instance, they announce “Lost and Found” items as well as pets! If you lose something, just call up the radio station!

I particularly like this story:
One time last year I was rolling into town kind of late and the DJ on the radio station was announcing lost and found items. He proceeded to go through a long list of people who lost cell phones and sunglasses… and then announced, “Lost: a blue Mountain Hardware Puffy jacket, left at the Silver Queen”. The DJ kept listing more cell phones and sunglasses and other items that were lost and found, until he read, “Found: blue Mountain Hardware puffy jacket, found at the Silver Que… Folks, I think we have a match here!” I love this, because there certainly aren’t a whole lot of towns where you would hear Lost and Found on the radio station. Better yet, if you lose something here, the community is so fantastic that you’re actually likely to see the item you lost again! That would be highly unlikely in Denver!

Picture of one of the rooms inside the station, where lots and lots and lots of CD’s are stored!

#12: It is surrounded by beautiful mountains

No matter where you are in Crested Butte, there are beautiful mountains everywhere. When you climb one of those beautiful mountains, you can see more mountains that are just as beautiful in the distance. The scenery of the area never ceases to amaze me no matter where I am, or what time of year it is. Over the last year I have taken the time to really be able to identify my most favorite mountains. Some of them are below!

Star (ooooh, I want to ski this!)

Hot political debates in the town of Crested Butte:

1)Snodgrass

CBMR (Crested Butte Mountain Resort) is in the process of expanding the ski area to this mountain. Largely, it is a plot to build more condos which they can sell and therefore make more money. CBMR says that the ski area needs more intermediate slopes, which can be provided by Snodgrass. But residents love the mountain as it has some easy to access backcountry skiing and is home to one of the most popular mountain bike trails in the valley.

2) Red Lady

Red Lady, as local residents call it, is formally known as Mt. Emmons. Recently a company called Kobex has been trying to petition the National Forest to build a large scale molybdenum mine on the face of this beautiful peak. Residents are largely opposed because they don’t want the pollution caused from the mining and they don’t want the beautiful Red Lady to be scarred. The mine would also bring larger issues- for instance the only road to the mountain goes right through the heart of town, so big noisy mining trucks would have to go through peaceful downtown Crested Butte. Residents also fear what a mine on this large of scale would do to property values and to community dynamics (because new residents who work for the mine would move here). Kobex argues that a mine like this would only improve the local economy and diversify the population.

#11: The Movie Theater has $7 tickets AND they serve booze!

The Majestic Theatre is a small local movie theater but it treats it’s locals well. Tickets are only $7.50, whereas in most theaters on the Front Range and elsewhere you pay nearly $10. With the extra $2-$3 you saved, they hope that you will spend it on booze. I prefer the margaritas there :) The Majestic does play all the latest box office movies, as well as some movies lower on the radar. But, if a movie comes into town you need to go see it quick! They generally seem to play movies for only about 2-3 weeks.

12 Things I like about Crested Butte

I am enjoying the second half of my Christmas break in Crested Butte. Crested Butte sure has had a lot of snow so far this year. Earlier this week a snow storm dropped over a foot of fresh snow and more is on the way beginning Friday. For now, we are enjoying the snow still from the previous storm. Even though the area is pretty skied out, the snow is still in great shape.

Since I am spending over a week here in Crested Butte, I thought I’d create a little blogging theme… I came up with “Twelve things I like about Crested Butte”. I will try to post one of the things each day for the next twelve days, starting today. So, join me in celebrating what makes Crested Butte such a fantastic place!
