14erskiers’ Patagonia Book Giveaway

(Last Updated On: December 13, 2012)

Just in time for the holiday season, we’re pleased to offer an incredible book giveaway for on e of our lucky readers from Patagonia books. Patagonia is obviously mostly known for their clothing, but their book division has some great titles that I suspect appeal to all of our readers, and best of all they’re available in both hard copies and ebook versions. For the complete patagonia library, go here: http://www.patagonia.com/us/shop/provisions-books?k=1H-aw

My favorites? Well, there’s a few. For starters, there is The Responsible Company: What We’ve Learned From Patagonia’s First 40 Years by Patagonia Founder/CEO Yvon Chouinard. Mr Chouinard visited the Western State campus several years ago and gave a great presentation on this very subject. It’s an interesting subject, how businesses operate in this modern global age- and Patagonia does better than most keeping both the earth and stakeholders happy.

I’ve looked for this one at a few bookstores, I’m looking forward to reading this one: Beyond the Mountain by Steve House is the winner of the 2009 Broadman Tasker Award and the 2009 Banff Mountain Book Award for Mountain Literature. Steve House has been one of the leaders of cutting edge, “light is right” climbing for some time, and I can’t wait to read his take on climbing.

Fred Beckey’s 100 Favorite North American Climbs is another one I’d love to check out. Fred Beckey is, after all, the godfather of first ascents and has climbed seemingly everything. So, for a climb to make his top 100 list, you know it must be good:

Well, that’s it for me. There are some other great titles on travel, surfing, and more so check it out.

How do I win? Well, we’ll make this one easy. To enter, leave a comment here, and name the book you’d most like to receive (hard copy or ebook). Bonus points if you also mention your favorite book of all time, you can never have too many great books. Even more bonus points if you “like” or “follow” 14erskiers- just 12 more “likes” to hit 500. Contest ends December 22nd– we’ll select a winner at random after that. Looking forward to lots of comments!!!!

My book of choice would be “Unexpected: 30 Years of Patagonia Catalog Photography”. There is something wonderful about seeing an instant caught on camera. Sometimes it is staged and sometimes it is just luck but the camera’s eye takes me to amazing places that I can only dream of. It is the reason I have dozens of great sites bookmarked in my browser. I love seeing beyond my vision into someone else’s vision. Plus a few of my friends have been in Patagonia catalogs in previous years as either athletes or photographers and I am super proud of their efforts. My favorite book of all time is the last one I read (sometimes). Powder Burn was a really good one if you haven’t read it yet. Sorry I can’t “like” you on Facebook but I can tell you I like you two and I haven’t even met you yet. Cheers.

“Fred Beckey’s 100 Favorite North American Climbs” looks pretty drool-worthy.

My most memorable book ever was “Les Miserables” by Victor Hugo. In the mountaineering genre probably “Annapurna” by Maurice Herzog – RIP.

My preferred book would be “Unexpected: 30 Years of Patagonia Catalog Photography” – having been a Patagoniac for most of my life, I grew up with the frequent Patagonia catalogs that I poured over, dreaming of the freedom and adventures that the subjects experienced. It was like a Christmas catalog full of toys that came all year!

Ed Abbey’s book “Desert Solitaire” is my favorite book of all time.

    Thank you!

I’d love a copy of Yosemite In the Sixties by Glen Denny. I’m hoping to make it to Yosemite in 2013.

+1 for The Responsible Company. I would offer to lend my copy but I ended up highlighting too much of it to be useful to anybody else.

My favorite book is a tough question, but might have to be Robinson Crusoe.

    Thanks!

Fred Beckeys 100 fav climbs I would love to have to learn from and just read. Beyond the mountain is a great book, by a great alpinist. All that glitters, by Margo Talbot, I am currently engrossed. The hobbit plus lord of Rings, obviously amazing and my first love Huck Finn, first great book about adventure! I could go on but that hopefully covers a few bases.

Hard choice! Have read and loved Yvons books and Steve Houses book is excellent. It is going to have to be Closer to the Ground for me. I’m already trying to live a life with less resources, so the chance of learning from others who have done so is something I’d like to have.

Favourite book of all time… going to have to be 1984 by George Orwell. Excellent read, somewhat scary as it is the direction things are going once again.

They all look great, but picking one hard-copy, I’d have to go with “The Voyage of the Cormorant”
by Christian Beamish. I’ve always wanted to sail… The book that got me outdoors was “Hatchet” by Gary Paulsen.

Would love a copy of “Let My People Go Surfing” by the great Yvon Chouinard. As for my favorite book, it’d have to be “Mud, Sweat, and Tears” by Bear Grylls. You guys are awesome, thank you!

Fred Beckey’s 100 Favorite North American Climbs in the hardcover format would be a great ‘coffee table book’ please! I’m currently reading The Republic by Plato which is amazing, though Freedom of the Hills would probably be my all time favourite! Thanks for the chance!

ps I hit the 500th ‘like’ on Facebook!
