As far as laces vs. velcro vs. ratchets, I'm normally a fan of velcro and ratchets on my standard bike shoes, but with these, since I was mostly after great walkability, I really liked the laces. Velcro and ratchets tend to make for a less even flex and hot spots, IMO. The laces are kind of a pain if you're used to taking your shoes off for water crossings, though.
